Chapter 1 - Best Idea Ever (Excerpt)

Sandy held her firefighter helmet in her hand and gazed up at the large white pine tree before her, thinking hard. What if we are in the middle of an other long summer drought and this large pine tree catches fire?! From childhood, she remembered the fire engines with their sirens and flashing red lights, the darkening sky filled with falling ash, a woodchuck family flreeing for their lives, and a firefighter sho said, "Pine trees aren't just cathcing fire' they're exploding in bright orange flames."

Chapter 6 - Tug of War (Excerpt)

Walking into the early spring fire prevention class, Billy was aware of every girl in the room noticing his good looks. To everyone in the class, he appreared to be at ease. He took a seat, smiled back and lightly chatters. But inside, his stomach churned. BIlly didn't know what to do. He had spotted Kim at a working house fire, again, and was amized. His mind struggled with wanting to be her friend and with the pressing need to correct the situation before anyone got hurt....

Chapter 14 - Smokey II (Excerpt)

Sunday morning, the wildland firefighter instructor eyed his students over the rim of this glasses and said, "There are two kinds of people in this world. Those who have faith in electronic gadgets and those who have faith in pencil and people."

THE CONSERVATION BEHIND THE STORY

As pictured on right is a lost Pine Barrens view photographed by Larry Paul. He and others plan to restore these lost views with a 34 foot fire tower that you can safely climb.

Excerpt follows:

"Sandy when you were a baby, I used to bring you up here all the time so that we could look upon the Pine Barrens. "I'm afraid the trees have grown up as well." Emma sighed.

"But I can see everything," shouted Sandy who had climbed up a pitch pine. "I can see the ocean!"

"Not everyone is as young and strong as you, to climb trees."

THE MAKING OF SUNRISE FIRE

Excerpt:

With Quality Parks underway as a charity working on conservation projects, Mindy turned to its volunteers to fill in for Gretchen. The response was overwhelming, and soon Mindy realized that in creating opportunities to participate in the publication process, volunteers would also learn more about the Pine Barrens and nature conservation.

While volunteers worked to balance content and character to create an educational yet entertaining story, Mindy found new ways for them to contribute to Sunrise Fire. As with independent films, but with different roles, the Production Team grew. It divided and expanded into chapter reviewers, editors, producers, production assistants, illustrators, and more.

Five Star - My Thoughs

I recently had the opportunity to read the story Sunrise Fire, by Mindy Block. Before I start talking about my opinion of the book, I have to let you know I am something of a procrastinator. Normally it will take me weeks to read a book. This book, I finished in a matter of days. It was that good to me.

Sunrise Fire is not only a story about fighting fires. The main storyline follows three teenage girls, Sandy, Kim, and Tina, as they explore both the world of firefighting and how to navigate the world of a teenager. Having been a teenager myself, and fairly recently at that, I thought the story handled these issues very well, while also educating about the world of firefighting and wildland protection, and the issues that are faced when the two meet. Throughout all this the book managed to keep me engaged and entertained.

I would definitely recomend this book to anybody interested in learning about firefighting issues, or just looking for a good read.
