ENVIRONMENT-VIETNAM: Paying the Price of Rapid Development

This article by Helen Clark in IPS NEWS (12/10/08) caught my attention because it deals with Payment of Ecosystem Services (PES). I just found out about this at a land management conference in Jacksonville, Florida. PES is also popular in Costa Rick and Germany. I wonder how this concept can be implemented on Long Island to encourage people to purchase and restore land as open space.
Vietnam's environmental issues have been pushed to the forefront after it was reported in mid-September that a Taiwanese MSG producer had been dumping untreated waste water into the Thi Vai River.
What has left many shaken is the sheer extent of the problem in this country.
